"The argument is that
while human suffering caused by Katrina is severe and must be addressed, the economic
impact of Katrina is equally severe and equally worthy of attention. LSU will be
a key factor in the economic recovery of Louisiana for several reasons, but simply
put LSU is an economic force that has and must continue to provide the research,
leadership and intellectual fuel required to drive Louisiana’s economy. The importance
of LSU to the State’s economy was not diminished by Katrina, on the contrary...
Unfortunately, in the near future state funding for LSU’s programs may be jeopardized
by competing needs and funding for capital programs will almost certainly be reduced;
therefore the need for increased funding from the private sector should be apparent.
Utilizing the approach
I have outlined – acknowledging the human suffering caused by Katrina and the need
to address it, while at the same time noting the economic devastation caused by
Katrina and that LSU must play a key role in recovery – I see no reason why anyone
should feel reluctant to initiate or continue fundraising campaigns aimed at addressing
LSU’s capital needs."
